Will I keep my number, WhatsApp and my 2FA codes with an eSIM?
The question I get most before a trip isn't about price. It's this one: "if I put an eSIM in my phone, do I lose my number?" The short answer is no. The longer answer contains one trap that has locked people out of their own bank account in a foreign country, and it's worth five minutes of your time.
Your number doesn't go anywhere
A travel eSIM is a second line, not a replacement. Your usual SIM stays exactly where it is, with your number, your contract and your contacts. The eSIM sits alongside it and does one job: carrying data. Your phone shows two lines, and you decide which one does what.
That means WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram keep working with your usual number. Those apps are tied to the number you registered with, not to the connection carrying them. They travel over any data — your eSIM, a café's wifi, anything. Your friends see the same you.
The trap: the codes that arrive by SMS
Here is where it goes wrong. Bank confirmations, two-factor codes, the message from the airline — a lot of them still arrive by SMS, and SMS travels on your original line, not on your eSIM's data.

So when someone switches their main line off completely to be safe from roaming charges, they also switch off the codes. You find out at the worst possible moment: a hotel asking for a card confirmation, a bank wanting to validate a payment, an airline sending a new gate. And you can't receive the message that would fix it.
The setup that works
Keep both lines, and split their jobs. Leave your original line switched on so it can receive calls and SMS — receiving a text costs nothing in most cases, and that's what carries your codes. Turn data roaming off on that same line, so it can never quietly spend your money. Then set your eSIM as the line used for mobile data.
On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, choose your travel eSIM under "Mobile Data" and make sure "Allow Mobile Data Switching" is off; then open your main line and turn Data Roaming off. On Android the wording changes by manufacturer, but the path is the same: SIM manager, pick which SIM carries mobile data, and disable roaming on the other.
Two things to do before you leave
Move what you can to an authenticator app. Codes generated on the device don't need any network at all — no SMS, no data, nothing. Most banks and every major service now offer it, and it removes the whole problem in ten minutes at home.
Then check your main line's outgoing costs once. You'll almost certainly never use it, but knowing what a call would cost means you can make one in an emergency without hesitating.
