How to Install and Activate an eSIM on iPhone
Got your eSIM from AEY and not sure what's next? Installing an eSIM on an iPhone takes about two minutes — and you don't need to remove your current SIM. Here's every step.
Before you start
You'll need:
- An eSIM-compatible iPhone (iPhone XR / XS or newer) on the latest iOS
- A Wi-Fi connection (install your eSIM before you travel, while still online)
- The QR code or activation details AEY sent you by email
Step 1 — Open eSIM setup
Go to Settings → Cellular (called Mobile Data or Mobile Service in some regions), then tap Add eSIM.
Step 2 — Scan the QR code
Choose Use QR Code and point your camera at the code AEY emailed you. No camera handy (code on the same phone)? Tap Enter Details Manually and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email.
Step 3 — Label the plan
iPhone asks you to name the line. Call it something clear like "Travel" or "AEY" so you can tell it apart from your usual number.
Step 4 — Choose how your lines work
- Default line: keep your normal number for calls and texts.
- Cellular data: select your new AEY eSIM as the data line for your trip.
You keep your phone number active while using AEY data abroad.
Step 5 — Turn data on (the activation bit)
On your AEY line, make sure Data Roaming is ON. A travel eSIM reaches local networks abroad through roaming partners, so this switch is what brings it to life — and since you're on your AEY plan (not your home operator), there are no surprise charges. To be safe, switch your home number's data off while traveling.
That's it — you're connected.
If it doesn't connect right away
- Toggle Airplane Mode off and on, or restart your iPhone.
- Confirm Data Roaming is ON for the AEY line and that it's set for Cellular Data.
- Make sure you've actually arrived in your destination country — the eSIM activates on the local network.
FAQ
Does installing an eSIM remove my current SIM?
No. Your iPhone runs both at once — your main line and your AEY travel eSIM side by side.
Can I install it before my trip?
Yes, and you should. Set it up on Wi-Fi at home; data activates when you reach your destination.
Can I reuse the QR code?
Usually no — it is single-use. Keep the plan in Settings rather than deleting it.
Do I need to set up an APN?
Almost never — it is automatic. If data will not load after activation, check your email for any APN AEY provided.
