The guide

Frankfurt plays on the contrast between glass towers and tradition. The business district lines up its skyscrapers around the European Central Bank, while the Römerberg, a reconstructed medieval square, embodies the old town with its town hall (Römer). The Kleinmarkthalle, an indoor market, delights food lovers with stalls of cheese, bread, spices and small eateries. For culture, the south bank of the Main hosts an exceptional row of museums, the Museumsufer. But the most authentic experience is in Alt-Sachsenhausen, the cider (Apfelwein) quarter, where you settle into traditional taverns over a Bembel and Hessian specialities like Grüne Soße. A climb up the Main Tower offers a sweeping view of this skyline, unique in Germany.

The cult German series A Case for Two (Ein Fall für zwei, from 1981, ZDF) made the Frankfurt skyline its visual signature. The heroes' office was filmed in a real building on Walter-Kolb-Straße, and shooting took place mainly on location in the city.

Nicknamed Mainhattan, Frankfurt is the only major German city with a true skyline of towers, a legacy of its role as a financial capital and home to the European Central Bank. Yet its historic old town around the Römerberg was almost entirely rebuilt after the destruction of World War II.

To taste the city's soul, cross the Main to Alt-Sachsenhausen and its Ebbelwoi quarter, where Apfelwein is served from a jug (Bembel). Scout the authentic taverns (look for the fir wreath at the door) ahead of time via a data eSIM.

Must-see

Römerberg
Historic square at the heart of the old town, lined with half-timbered houses and the town hall (Römer). Largely rebuilt after the war, it remains the tourist centre and the stage for markets and festivals.
Kleinmarkthalle
A gourmet indoor market, the belly of Frankfurt: cheese, bread, spices, cold cuts and wines from local producers. Small stalls and eateries ideal for a quick lunch or assembling a picnic.
Alt-Sachsenhausen
The cider quarter on the south bank of the Main, the heart of Apfelwein culture. Traditional taverns serving cider from a Bembel, recognisable by the fir wreath hanging at the entrance.
Main Tower
One of the few Frankfurt towers with a public observation deck. Its terrace at nearly 200 metres offers a 360° view over the skyline, the Main and the city.

Good to know

Spring and autumn are pleasant for combining museums and strolls, while summer enlivens the Main banks. The U-Bahn metro and S-Bahn urban rail link the centre to the airport in about fifteen minutes, one of Europe's busiest air hubs. Tip: spot a genuine Apfelwein tavern by the fir wreath on its façade. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent across this well-connected hub city and free wifi is common; a data eSIM saves you any network worries the moment you step off the plane.
