The guide

Lyon reveals itself in layers. Renaissance Vieux-Lyon, a UNESCO site, unfolds its cobbled lanes and traditional bouchons beneath Fourvière hill and its basilica. The Presqu'île, between the Rhône and the Saône, gathers the shops, Place Bellecour and the opera house. Climb up to Croix-Rousse, the former district of the canuts (silk weavers), for its workshops, traboules and village feel. To the east, Confluence shows off bold contemporary architecture by the water. Food is everywhere: traditional bouchons, the Paul Bocuse market hall, open-air markets. In the evening, the Rhône embankments come alive with barge-bars. Don't miss the Festival of Lights in December, when the whole city glows with artistic installations. Lyon is easily explored on foot, helped by metro and funicular.

Bertrand Tavernier set his camera in Vieux-Lyon for « The Clockmaker of St. Paul » (1974), with Philippe Noiret as a watchmaker whose son turns to crime. The cobbled lanes of the Saint-Jean quarter and the banks of the Saône frame this melancholy debut by the Lyon-born director.

Cinema was born here: in the Monplaisir district, on rue du Premier-Film, Louis Lumière perfected the Cinématographe in the summer of 1894. The very first paid public screening took place on 28 December 1895 before 35 spectators, at one franc admission.

Slip into the traboules of Croix-Rousse, secret passageways linking streets through courtyards: the cour des Voraces is the most spectacular. With a data eSIM, you can spot the discreet entrances on the map instead of getting lost in the maze of stairways.

Must-see

Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
Perched on its hill, this 19th-century basilica overlooks the entire city. The esplanade offers the finest panorama of Lyon and, on clear days, all the way to the Alps. A funicular climbs up from Vieux-Lyon.
Lumière Museum
Housed in the family villa in Monplaisir, this museum traces the invention of cinema by the Lumière brothers. You can see the shed where « Workers Leaving the Factory », the very first film in history, was shot.
Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse
The temple of Lyon gastronomy brings together dozens of artisans: quenelles, charcuterie, cheeses aged by Mère Richard, pastries. Perfect for a quick lunch or stocking up on local specialities.
Parc de la Tête d'Or
One of France's largest urban parks, with its lake, rose garden and a free zoo. Locals gather here to run, row boats or picnic as soon as the weather turns fine.

Good to know

Lyon is worth visiting year-round, though spring and early autumn offer the best weather; December is special for the Festival of Lights. The TCL network (metro, tram, bus, funiculars) is dense and efficient, and the centre is easily walkable. Remember to validate your ticket. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the metropolitan area, including in the metro, and free wifi is available in many cafés and public spaces. A data eSIM activated on arrival saves you roaming fees and keeps you connected for journeys and bookings.
