The guide

Nice blends Italian charm with Mediterranean ease. The Old Town, a maze of ochre lanes, is full of artisan shops, lively squares and the scent of socca, the iconic chickpea pancake. Cours Saleya hosts its colourful market every morning. Climb Castle Hill for a sweeping view over the Bay of Angels and the rooftops. The Promenade des Anglais stretches seven kilometres along the sea, ideal on foot or by bike. The port district, with its pastel façades, hums with terraces and antique dealers. Art lovers shouldn't miss the Matisse and Chagall museums, set on the heights of Cimiez. In the evening, the old town comes alive with bars and restaurants. Nice is also the perfect base for exploring the French Riviera.

Luc Besson turned the Promenade des Anglais into the playground of « The Transporter » (2002), where Jason Statham weaves through Nice's seafront traffic. More recently, the series « Été 36 » (2026) recreated 1930s Nice along the Promenade and in front of the Hotel Negresco.

An authentic salade niçoise contains neither potato nor green bean, only tomatoes, egg, anchovies or tuna, olives and spring onions. The great chef Auguste Escoffier dared to add potatoes and beans, something the locals struggle to forgive: he came from Villeneuve-Loubet, in Provence, not from the County of Nice.

Head to the flower market on Cours Saleya early in the morning, when growers lay out fruit, vegetables and bouquets in the Old Town. With a data eSIM, you can compare reviews of nearby cafés and book a terrace table without hunting for wifi.

Must-see

Cours Saleya
The beating heart of Old Nice: a flower, fruit and vegetable market in the morning, antiques on Mondays, lively terraces at night. Its name comes from the « salted course », where salt unloaded on the beach once passed through.
Castle Hill
Reachable on foot or by lift, this park offers Nice's most famous panorama over the Bay of Angels, the port and the old-town rooftops. An artificial waterfall cools strollers in summer.
Promenade des Anglais
The iconic seafront lined with palm trees and its blue chairs. Seven kilometres of walking facing the Mediterranean, from the Negresco to the port, perfect on foot, by bike or on rollerblades.
Matisse Museum
Housed in a red Genoese villa on Cimiez hill, it gathers a rich collection from the painter, who lived and died in Nice. The surrounding olive grove invites a leisurely stroll.

Good to know

Nice enjoys a mild climate year-round; spring and autumn avoid the summer crowds, while February buzzes with the famous Carnival. The tramway efficiently serves the centre, the airport and the seafront, and the city is easily walkable. Strolling the Promenade is the most pleasant way around. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is very good along the entire coast and in the Old Town, and free wifi is widespread in cafés and hotels. A data eSIM activated on arrival keeps you connected with no roaming fees, handy for navigation, train timetables and bookings along the Riviera.
