The guide

Cappadocia is not a city but a region of central Turkey, carved by eruptions and erosion into a landscape of fairy chimneys, valleys and rock-cut churches. Göreme is its tourist heart, with cave hotels and an open-air museum of Byzantine frescoes. Wealthier Ürgüp gathers wine cellars and handsome stone houses, while Uçhisar towers over the region from its natural citadel. At dawn, more than a hundred hot-air balloons rise above the valleys: the region's signature sight. On foot, you can hike the Rose Valley, Red Valley or Pigeon Valley; underground, you can explore the cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı. Sunsets from Uçhisar Castle are unforgettable.

« Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance » (2011), starring Nicolas Cage, shot several scenes among the fairy chimneys of the Zelve Valley near Göreme and around Uçhisar. The volcanic landscapes serve as the backdrop for the film's supernatural showdown.

In 1963, a Derinkuyu resident renovating his home watched his chickens vanish into a crack in his cellar wall. Digging it open, he uncovered an eighteen-level underground city, 85 metres deep, able to shelter up to 20,000 people.

To photograph the balloons rising without the crowds, head to the viewpoint in the Love Valley (Aşk Vadisi) rather than the packed terraces of Göreme. Check on your data eSIM the night before whether flights are confirmed: they are cancelled at the slightest weather warning.

Must-see

Göreme Open-Air Museum
A cluster of churches and monasteries carved into the tuff, UNESCO-listed and adorned with remarkably preserved Byzantine frescoes. The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) holds the most vivid paintings.
Derinkuyu Underground City
A vast multi-level cave city dug to shelter entire populations, with wells, stables and ventilation systems. You descend through narrow tunnels to dozens of metres below ground.
Uçhisar Castle
The highest point in Cappadocia, this rock outcrop riddled with rooms and tunnels dominates the whole region. The sunset panorama over the valleys and villages is spectacular.
Zelve Valley
A former rock-cut village inhabited until the mid-20th century, now an open-air museum. Its canyons and carved dwellings served as a backdrop for « Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ».

Good to know

Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer the best balance: clear skies for ballooning and mild temperatures; summer is hot and winter freezing but stunning under snow. Distances between villages are covered by rental car, shuttle or organised tours; walking is ideal in the valleys. Tip: book your balloon flight several days ahead, as seats go fast. Mobile 4G coverage is good in the villages and along main roads, but can weaken deep in the remote valleys.
