Built on twelve islands linked by over a hundred bridges, Wrocław (the former Breslau) is one of Poland's liveliest, most student-filled cities. Its Rynek, the country's oldest medieval market square, bursts with colourful Gothic and Renaissance façades around a flamboyant town hall. To the northeast, Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island, plunges into the Middle Ages, its lanes still gas-lit at dusk. The Nadodrze district, once rough, is becoming the local Kazimierz, full of cafés and workshops. Everywhere, the hunt for bronze dwarfs sets the rhythm of the stroll. Wrocław blends a turbulent history, creativity and pure joie de vivre.

The Nadodrze district, with its early-20th-century façades frozen in time, was chosen by Steven Spielberg to stand in for Cold War East Berlin in « Bridge of Spies » (2015). Kurkowa, Ptasia and Mennicza streets were dressed as 1950s Berlin for the shoot.

The hundreds of little bronze dwarfs (krasnale) scattered across the city are no tourist gimmick: they descend from the Orange Alternative, a peaceful and absurdist resistance movement against communism in the 1980s. More than a thousand can now be found, from the plumber dwarf to the Sisyphus dwarfs.

Rynek (market square)

Poland's oldest grand medieval square, ringed by colourful Gothic and Renaissance houses. At its centre, the flamboyant town hall houses one of Europe's oldest restaurants, the Piwnica Świdnicka.

Ostrów Tumski

The cathedral island and cradle of the city, with a preserved medieval atmosphere. Its lamps still lit by hand with gas each evening and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist make it Wrocław's most romantic corner.

Wrocław Dwarfs

Over a thousand bronze figurines hidden across the city, heirs to the anti-communist Orange Alternative. Pick up a map at the information point near the town hall to track them down.

Tumski Bridge

An elegant iron bridge linking Sand Island to Ostrów Tumski, nicknamed the Lovers' Bridge. A plumber dwarf stands guard; once covered in padlocks, it offers a superb view of the cathedral.

Good to know

Wrocław is ideally explored from May to September, when the market-square terraces and Oder riverbanks come alive; September brings the International Dwarf Festival. The centre is walkable and a dense tram network covers the rest.
