Tiny but monumental, Valletta sits on a fortified peninsula overlooking the Grand Harbour. Built by the Knights of St John in the wake of the Great Siege of 1565, it unfolds a grid of sloping streets lined with baroque palaces, the knights' auberges and colourful timber balconies. The main street, Republic Street, runs from the city gate to Fort St Elmo, passing St John's Co-Cathedral and the Grand Master's Palace. The Upper Barrakka Gardens give the finest panorama over the Three Cities opposite. At night, the lanes of Strait Street come alive with bars. Compact, it can be walked end to end in a few hours, between history and golden light.
