Petra, the former capital of the Nabataean kingdom, is reached from the village of Wadi Musa. You enter through the Siq, a narrow winding crevice over a kilometre long that opens abruptly onto the Khazneh. Beyond lies a vast city carved from pink and ochre sandstone: royal tombs, an ancient theatre, a colonnaded street and temples. The trail then climbs toward the Monastery or the « Treasury from above » viewpoint. Allow at least a full day, ideally two, as the site is enormous. The atmosphere is stark and grand, especially at dawn. Things to do: walk the Siq, admire the Khazneh, climb to the Monastery and, on some evenings, experience candlelit « Petra by Night ».
🎬Petra is world-famous thanks to « Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade » (1989): the facade of the Khazneh (the Treasury) serves as the entrance to the temple housing the Grail in the finale of Steven Spielberg's film. The site also appeared in « Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen » (2009).
✨The Khazneh, nicknamed « the Treasury », never actually held any treasure: it was a Nabataean royal mausoleum. Bedouin legend held that a carved urn atop the facade hid gold, which is why bullet marks fired at it are still visible today.
