The guide

Los Angeles is less a single city than a mosaic of neighborhoods stitched together by freeways. Downtown has reclaimed its Art Deco grandeur around Broadway and the Walt Disney Concert Hall, while the Arts District fills former warehouses with galleries and cafes. Westward, bohemian Venice and its canals lead to Santa Monica and its pier. Hollywood keeps its cinematic aura, but Silver Lake, Echo Park and Los Feliz now hold the creative pulse, full of record shops and patios. The hills of Griffith Park deliver the finest views over the urban sprawl and the Hollywood sign. Mexican culture saturates Boyle Heights and the markets, and the coast, from Malibu to the South Bay, reminds you the beach is never far. Everything happens by car, sunglasses on.

Blade Runner's final showdown (1982) unfolds inside the Bradbury Building, an 1893 wrought-iron atrium on South Broadway downtown.

The Hollywood sign went up in 1923 as a mere 21,000-dollar billboard for a hillside housing development called Hollywoodland.

Grand Central Market, a 1917 food hall on South Broadway: tacos, pupusas and doughnuts across 40-plus stalls beloved by locals.

Must-see

Griffith Observatory
Perched on Mount Hollywood, this 1935 observatory is free to enter. Take in the city, the Hollywood sign and the night sky through public telescopes on clear evenings. A backdrop in countless films.
The Getty Center
Free museum by Richard Meier, set on a Brentwood hilltop and reached by tram. European paintings, landscaped gardens and sweeping views of the ocean and city make it a must-see.
Venice Beach Boardwalk
Lively seafront promenade alive with skaters, Muscle Beach bodybuilders, street performers and shops. Quintessentially eccentric California, extended by the nearby residential canals.
The Broad
Free downtown contemporary art museum wrapped in a honeycomb facade. Works by Warhol, Koons and Basquiat, plus Yayoi Kusama's famous Infinity Mirror Room, reservation required.

Good to know

Spring and fall are ideal; summer is hot and dry, winter mild with rainy spells. The car rules and freeways clog at rush hour; the expanding metro and bus network still struggles against the city's scale. Tip: cluster your sights by area to avoid hours wasted in traffic. As for connectivity, 4G/5G mobile coverage is excellent across the city and along the coast, and free wifi is common in cafes, malls and museums; a few canyon and hillside pockets stay patchy.
