The guide

Liverpool is organised around its waterfront, once a World Heritage site. The Albert Dock, a restored set of Victorian docks, houses museums and restaurants facing the Mersey. The Pier Head lines up the Three Graces, three landmark early-twentieth-century buildings. The Ropewalks district concentrates nightlife, bars and galleries, while the Baltic Triangle, a former industrial area, hosts creative studios, breweries and markets. The Georgian Quarter, around the two cathedrals, charms with its elegant streets. Mathew Street keeps the Beatles legacy alive with its clubs. The city, proud and warm, lives to the rhythm of football (Liverpool FC and Everton) and an ever-vibrant music scene inherited from a cosmopolitan port past.

The film The Batman (2022) turned the Georgian quarter around the Anglican Cathedral and Rodney Street into the streets of Gotham, making use of the listed façades. The imposing Royal Liver Building and St George's Hall have made Liverpool a much sought-after film location.

The Cavern Club on Mathew Street, where the Beatles performed nearly 300 times in the early 1960s, is not the original building: it was demolished in 1973, then rebuilt a few metres away using some of the original bricks. Liverpool has more statues than any British city outside London.

Push open the door of the Philharmonic Dining Rooms, a listed Victorian pub whose marble gentlemen's toilets are so remarkable that people visit them. Keep a data eSIM active to track down the evening's live gigs, of which the area has plenty.

Good to know

Summer is the most pleasant season, but Liverpool can be visited year-round, the maritime climate staying mild and damp. The centre is very walkable and the Merseyrail network serves the surroundings; the Mersey ferry offers a celebrated scenic crossing. John Lennon Airport is connected to the centre by bus. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is very good across the city and free wifi is widely available in museums and cafés; a data eSIM lets you buy tickets and navigate the moment you step off the train or plane, with no need to hunt for a hotspot.
