Jerusalem is felt first in its walled Old City, split into four quarters: Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian. Here you reach the Western Wall, the Temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, threaded by covered souks. Beyond the walls, the modern city unfolds in busy avenues: the Mahane Yehuda market, lively by day and turned into a bar district by night, and pedestrian Jaffa Street with its light rail. To the south lie the City of David and Mount Zion; to the east, the Mount of Olives offers the classic panorama over the walls and domes. Distances stay short and walking remains the best way to explore, while respecting the dress codes of holy sites.

The IMAX documentary « Jerusalem » (2013), produced with National Geographic, was granted rare access to the heart of the Old City. Crews filmed the Western Wall, the Temple Mount and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, including aerial shots over areas normally closed to flights.

The main door of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is opened and locked each day with an old key entrusted for centuries to two neighbouring Muslim families, the Joudeh and the Nuseibeh. This arrangement, the « status quo », keeps the peace among the Christian denominations that share the building.

Western Wall (Kotel)

The last remnant of the Second Temple's retaining wall, it is the holiest site in Judaism. The plaza is open continuously and free, with men and women praying in separate sections.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Built over the traditional site of Jesus' crucifixion and tomb, it dates to the 4th century. Several Christian denominations share its spaces, including the edicule enclosing the tomb.

Dome of the Rock

An Islamic shrine with a golden dome, raised on the Temple Mount in the 7th century. Its exterior dominates the Old City; access to the plateau for non-Muslims is limited to set hours.

Mahane Yehuda Market

Jerusalem's main market, between Jaffa and Agrippas streets, sells fresh produce, spices and pastries. In the evening the lanes and stalls give way to bars and street food.

Good to know

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the most pleasant seasons; summer is hot and dry. The city is walkable, complemented by a modern light rail linking the central station and Jaffa Street. Mind Shabbat, from Friday evening to Saturday evening: many shops close and public transport stops. Pack clothing covering shoulders and knees for holy sites.
