The guide

Interlaken is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, set between two turquoise lakes facing the Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau trio. Its main artery, the Höheweg, lines up Belle Époque hotels, terraces and the Höhematte meadow where paragliders land. The town lives for adventure: bungee jumping, canyoning, mountain biking and hiking all start here. Above all it is a railway base camp: from Interlaken Ost station, trains climb to Grindelwald, to Lauterbrunnen with its famous waterfall village, and on to the Jungfraujoch, the « highest railway station in Europe ». Two districts, Interlaken and Unterseen, frame the river Aare; older, quieter Unterseen is worth a stroll for its old town. Evenings stay calm and family-friendly, turned toward the mountains.

The nearby village of Iseltwald, on Lake Brienz, became a pilgrimage site thanks to the Korean series « Crash Landing on You » (2019-2020), whose famous piano-on-the-pier scene was filmed there. Higher up, the Schilthorn and its revolving Piz Gloria restaurant served as the villain's lair in the James Bond film « On Her Majesty's Secret Service » (1969).

The very name Interlaken means « between the lakes » in Latin, as the town stretches across the isthmus separating Lake Thun from Lake Brienz. Since the 1960s the region has also been a Bollywood star: « Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge » (1995) shot iconic scenes here, and some hotels still run tours along the Indian-cinema trail.

To escape the crowds on the Höheweg, ride the funicular up to the Harder Kulm viewpoint and soak in the panorama over the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau from its suspended walkway. Activate your eSIM as soon as you arrive at the station to check live mountain weather and the timetables of the cog railways, which are often adjusted to conditions.

Must-see

Harder Kulm
Interlaken's viewpoint at 1,322 m, reached in a ten-minute funicular ride. Its « Two Lakes Bridge » platform juts into thin air for a sweeping view over both lakes and the snowy peaks.
Jungfraujoch
The « Top of Europe » at 3,454 m, reached by cog railway via Kleine Scheidegg. It features an ice palace, panoramic terraces and the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps.
Lauterbrunnen
A glacial valley nearby, famous for its 72 waterfalls including the dramatic Staubbach plunging nearly 300 m. The scenery is said to have inspired Tolkien's Rivendell.
Lake Brienz and Iseltwald
Intensely turquoise waters fringed by postcard villages. The hamlet of Iseltwald and its pier have become heavily visited since the series « Crash Landing on You ».

Good to know

High season runs June to September for hiking and December to March for skiing; spring and autumn are quieter and clearer. Everything happens by train and funicular: the two stations, Interlaken Ost and West, feed the mountain network, and a Swiss Travel Pass simplifies journeys. Book Jungfraujoch excursions ahead, as they sell out fast. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent in town and in the valleys but can drop in rail tunnels and on some summits; free wifi is available in most hotels and stations.
