The guide

Hamburg is best experienced along the water. The Speicherstadt and the modern HafenCity are made for walking, between canals and brick façades, before heading up to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza for the panorama. The St. Pauli district concentrates nightlife around the Reeperbahn, while Sunday mornings draw night owls and families alike to the fish market (Fischmarkt). To unwind, the Alster, a large lake right in the centre, is perfect for boating and strolls along the Jungfernstieg. Planten un Blomen park, with one of the largest Japanese gardens in Europe, offers a green break. The trendy Schanzenviertel and Ottensen neighbourhoods round things off with cafés, independent shops and a laid-back, typically Hamburg atmosphere.

Fatih Akin's The Golden Glove (2019) dives into 1970s St. Pauli around serial killer Fritz Honka. Exterior scenes were shot at the real Reeperbahn and Zeißstraße, while the bar and apartment interiors were rebuilt one-to-one inside the port's Überseezentrum.

The Speicherstadt, the world's largest warehouse district, rests entirely on oak piles driven into the Elbe's marshy ground. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it now houses Miniatur Wunderland, the largest model railway network on the planet.

Head up to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza for free (book a timed ticket) for a 360° view over the harbour and canals. Reserve your slot online as soon as you land using a data eSIM, since the free tickets go fast.

Must-see

Elbphilharmonie
Spectacular concert hall opened in 2017, built atop a former HafenCity warehouse. Its Plaza, free to access with a timed ticket, offers one of the finest panoramic views over the harbour and the Speicherstadt.
Speicherstadt
UNESCO-listed red-brick warehouse district built on wooden piles and crossed by canals and bridges. Its lanes house museums and the famous Miniatur Wunderland, best explored on foot or by boat.
Planten un Blomen
Hamburg's largest central park, with botanical gardens, ponds and one of the biggest Japanese gardens in Europe. A favourite spot for locals to stroll and picnic in every season.
Reeperbahn
Legendary St. Pauli avenue, the heart of Hamburg nightlife with bars, clubs and theatres. This is where the Beatles got their start in the early 1960s, playing the district's clubs.

Good to know

The best time is May to September, when terraces and boat trips are in full swing, though Hamburg keeps its charm in the rain. The U-Bahn metro and S-Bahn urban rail cover the whole city and reach the airport in about twenty minutes. Tip: on Sundays, don't miss the dawn Fischmarkt. As for connectivity, 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the metro area and free wifi is common in cafés; a data eSIM activated on arrival lets you book tickets and routes without hunting for a signal.
