Hallstatt clings to a narrow strip between the lake and the Dachstein cliffs, making it one of Europe's most photographed villages. Everything is walkable: the market square (Marktplatz) with its colourful houses, the lanes climbing to the Catholic church and its ossuary, and the lakeside dotted with jetties where the famous view opens up. Above the village, a funicular climbs to the « World Heritage View » Skywalk at 360 metres and to the world's oldest salt mine, worked for over 7,000 years. UNESCO-listed since 1997, the site is best experienced early or late, once the day-trippers have gone. Bring sturdy shoes for the stairs and a jacket, even in summer, for the mine and viewing platform.
🎬Since Frozen was released in 2013, Hallstatt has become a pilgrimage: the village has welcomed more than a million extra visitors convinced they recognise Arendelle. The film's creators, however, said they drew on Norway and Canada, and Disney has never confirmed the link.
✨With its graveyard hemmed in between lake and mountain, Hallstatt exhumed bodies and kept the skulls in the Beinhaus. Since 1720, more than 600 have been painted with flowers and names; the most recent dates from 1983, a woman who wished to rest there.

ℹ️Summer is gorgeous but very busy; spring, autumn and even snowy winter offer a calmer mood.
