A great Baltic port with a Hanseatic past, Gdańsk dazzles with its Royal Way (Długi Targ), lined with tall, colourful gabled houses faithfully rebuilt after wartime destruction. Neptune's Fountain marks the centre, between Artus Court and the Green and Golden Gates. Mariacka Street, the world capital of amber, and the great medieval crane (Żuraw) on the Motława embody the city's merchant soul. 🎬Andrzej Wajda's « Wałęsa: Man of Hope » (2013), a biopic of Lech Wałęsa, was filmed on the very sites of the history, in the historic Gdańsk Shipyard and its surroundings. It was there that Wajda had already shot « Man of Iron » (1981), Palme d'Or winner at Cannes, at the height of the Solidarność movement.
✨It was at the Gdańsk Shipyard that Solidarność was born, the Eastern Bloc's first free trade union, whose 1980 strike set off the fall of communism in Europe. Neptune's Fountain, meanwhile, is so emblematic that legend ties it to the local golden liqueur, Goldwasser, flecked with real gold leaf.
