Dubai is a city of contrasts, between tradition and excess. Old Dubai, around Deira and Bur Dubai, remains the most authentic and affordable: you cross the creek by abra, the wooden water taxis, to reach the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk, among the liveliest markets in town. At the other extreme, Downtown embodies vertical Dubai, dominated by the Burj Khalifa and its free fountain show, all anchored to the vast Dubai Mall. Further south, Dubai Marina lines up its residential towers along a man-made canal, with a waterfront promenade and nearby beaches. Between air-conditioned skyscrapers and spice-scented lanes, the city is best discovered in very different slices, ideally linked by the metro.

The best season runs from November to March, when the climate turns pleasant; the rest of the year heat can be punishing, often between 25 and 40 °C, which makes air-conditioned interiors the default. The clean, modern, driverless metro (red and green lines) serves most sights, complemented by taxis and abras; a Nol card makes travel easy. Tip: visit the souks in the evening to escape the heat. On connectivity, free wifi is widespread in malls, hotels and metro stations, and the city's mobile coverage ranks among the fastest and most reliable in the world.
