The Museum of Islamic Art was designed by I.M. Pei, who at 91 had to come out of retirement to take the commission. He travelled the Muslim world for six months before citing Cairo's 9th-century Ibn Tulun Mosque as his inspiration, and he rejected every proposed site to insist on a purpose-built artificial peninsula in the bay, so no building could ever crowd his own.

Museum of Islamic Art
I.M. Pei's limestone masterpiece on its own artificial peninsula in Doha Bay displays 1,400 years of Islamic art from three continents: metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, textiles and glass. Reopened in October 2022 after renovation, its cream stone shifts shade through the day.

Souq Waqif
Doha's atmospheric traditional market. After a 2003 fire, it was rebuilt from 2006 in mud-rendered heritage style. Today it is the city's hub for food, spices, crafts and its famous Falcon Souq.

National Museum of Qatar
Jean Nouvel's desert rose, opened on 28 March 2019, formed from hundreds of large interlocking curved disks inspired by the crystal mineral. Its eleven galleries trace Qatar's environment, culture and history, wrapping the restored 1906 palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani.

The Pearl-Qatar
