The Danube splits Budapest into two faces, joined in 1873. On the west bank, Buda is hilly and residential: home to the castle, Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion, along with the hot springs that have fed the thermal baths for centuries. On the east bank, Pest is flat, dense and very walkable, with the Parliament, St. Stephen's Basilica, the great covered market and most of the cafés, restaurants and nightlife. The heart of that nightlife beats in the Jewish Quarter (District VII, Erzsébetváros), birthplace of the ruin bars set inside old tenement buildings, around Kazinczy and Dob streets. For a breather, Margaret Island offers a vast green stretch in the middle of the river.
