The guide

Antalya blends an Ottoman old town, Roman ruins and turquoise waters. The historic core, Kaleiçi, is a maze of cobbled lanes, overhanging houses turned into boutique hotels and flowering courtyards, sloping down to a crescent-shaped old harbour. You enter through Hadrian's Gate, a Roman triumphal arch raised in 130 AD for the emperor's visit. To the west stretches the pebble beach of Konyaaltı, to the east the long sandy beach of Lara. The city also serves as a base for the ancient sites nearby: Aspendos, Perge, Side and their Roman theatres. The Düden waterfalls, both in town and at the seafront, round out the picture between nature and heritage.

« Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre » (2023), by Guy Ritchie, shot several scenes in the Antalya region, notably at the Expo exhibition centre. The coast's sunny climate has made it an increasingly sought-after backlot for international productions.

Legend has it that Alexander the Great watered his horses at the Düden waterfall during his conquest of Pamphylia, around 334 BC. The falls, known in antiquity as Kataraktes, even appeared on Antalya's ancient coins, alongside a river god.

Kaleiçi (old town)

Antalya's historic quarter, a labyrinth of cobbled lanes, restored Ottoman houses and shops, descending to a picturesque old harbour lined with cafés and excursion boats.

Hadrian's Gate

A three-arched Roman triumphal gate, raised in 130 AD for the visit of Emperor Hadrian. It is the only surviving gate of the ancient walls, at the entrance to Kaleiçi.

Aspendos Theatre

East of Antalya, this Roman theatre built under Marcus Aurelius is one of the best-preserved of antiquity. Its stage still hosts concerts and opera and ballet festivals in summer.

Düden Waterfalls

The upper falls, set in nature, can be crossed via a cave behind the curtain of water; the lower falls plunge forty metres straight into the Mediterranean, best seen from a boat or the park terraces.

Good to know

Antalya enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year: spring and autumn are perfect for visiting, summer is very hot and ideal for swimming, and winter stays mild. In town, a modern tram and buses serve the beaches and centre; for ancient sites like Aspendos or Side, a car or a tour is better. Tip: walk down into Kaleiçi early in the morning to beat the heat. 4G/5G coverage is very good all along the coast and free wifi is common in the hotels and cafés of Kaleiçi.
