Kazakhstan's largest city and cultural capital, Almaty stretches below the snow-capped Tian Shan, with elevation climbing from 500 to 1,700 metres. ✨Almaty is regarded as the birthplace of the apple: its name comes from the Kazakh word alma (apple), and the wild ancestor of every cultivated apple, Malus sieversii, still grows in the surrounding Tian Shan forests. Botanist Nikolai Vavilov traced the fruit's genetic origin here in the early 20th century, and modern DNA studies have confirmed it.
