The guide

Wyoming is the least populous state in the country, and you feel it: here, nature reigns. This is the cradle of Yellowstone, the world's first national park, a realm of geysers, iridescent hot springs and bison that stop traffic. Just to the south, Grand Teton raises its serrated peaks above lakes and the Snake River. But Wyoming is also the western culture of Cody, the wild valleys around Dubois, the Bighorn Mountains to the north, and the striking silhouette of Devils Tower to the east. Jackson serves as a lively base for exploring the Tetons and their wildlife. Between cowboys, wide-open spaces and geological wonders, this is a destination you hit the road to marvel at, as long as you accept the long distances and the solitude of the landscape.

Shane (1953) was filmed in Jackson Hole, at the foot of the Teton Range.

Yellowstone was the world's first national park, created in 1872; it sits atop a still-active supervolcano.

At Yellowstone, skip crowded Old Faithful: view Grand Prismatic from above at the Fairy Falls Overlook.

Must-see

Yellowstone National Park
As large as Delaware and Rhode Island combined, this geothermal paradise holds Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring, a hot spring of unreal colors. The Grand Loop circles it over 142 miles.
Grand Teton National Park
Jagged peaks rise above meadows, lakes and the Snake River. Jenny Lake and the National Elk Refuge are among the highlights, easily reached from the town of Jackson.
Devils Tower
A rock monolith sacred to Native American peoples and the first national monument in the United States. Made famous by Close Encounters of the Third Kind, it draws climbers and the curious in the state's east.
Bighorn Mountains
In northern Wyoming, halfway between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone. Grasslands, alpine lakes and the Cloud Peak Skyway, a scenic byway linking Buffalo to Ten Sleep, make it a stunning detour.

Good to know

The ideal season runs May through October, when the roads in Yellowstone and Grand Teton are open; from November to mid-April many roads close under snow. Distances are considerable: Yellowstone's loop alone is 142 miles, and a car is essential. Fill up regularly and pack water and warm layers, as evenings stay cool at altitude. As for the network, coverage is uneven: you can get a signal near Old Faithful and some Yellowstone entrances, but it is often absent elsewhere in the park. The Tetons are generally better covered.
