The guide

A volcanic archipelago in the middle of the Pacific, Hawaii brings together six major islands with strikingly different moods. Oahu pairs Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbor and the buzz of Honolulu with the legendary surf of the North Shore. Maui charms with the winding Road to Hana and the sunrise atop Haleakala. The Big Island, youngest of all, unfurls active volcanoes, black-sand beaches and the summit of Mauna Kea, ideal for stargazing. Kauai, nicknamed the Garden Isle, reveals the dramatic cliffs of the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon. Between rainforest hikes, snorkeling in turquoise waters, Polynesian culture and lazy days on dreamlike beaches, each island invites a journey at its own pace.

Kaaawa Valley at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu hosted the Gallimimus stampede in Jurassic Park (1993); the fallen tree still stands there.

Hawaii skips daylight saving time: being so near the equator, its day length barely shifts across the whole year.

To snorkel Hanauma Bay on Oahu, book 48 hours ahead and note the bay closes Mondays and Tuesdays to let the reef rest.

Must-see

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Big Island)
Home to the Kilauea volcano and its steam vents, where you can take in hardened lava flows, smoking craters and lunar landscapes along Chain of Craters Road, living witnesses to the ongoing birth of the islands.
Haleakala National Park (Maui)
A volcano whose summit above 3,000 m offers a legendary sunrise over the clouds; the dawn visit requires a National Park Service reservation that should be booked 60 days in advance, as slots sell out fast.
Na Pali Coast (Kauai)
Towering cliffs and emerald valleys reached by boat, helicopter or the demanding Kalalau Trail. The state park protects sixteen miles of wild coastline among the most photographed scenery in the archipelago.
Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial (Oahu)
A major historic site commemorating the 1941 attack. Free timed-entry tickets for the memorial release on Recreation.gov about 60 days ahead, with walk-up availability remaining very limited.

Good to know

The best windows are spring (April-May) and fall (September-November): pleasant weather, gentler prices and thinner crowds, while December-February sees rates climb. A rental car is all but essential, especially on the Big Island, which is vast and poorly served by public transit; book early, as popular dates sell out. As for connectivity, mobile coverage is reliable in towns and tourist hubs but turns patchy or absent in the volcanic parks, on mountain roads and along remote coastlines such as Na Pali. Download offline maps and routes before leaving the cities.
