The guide
Nicknamed the Mountain State, West Virginia is a sanctuary of Appalachian peaks, wild rivers and quiet small towns. Its crown jewel is New River Gorge National Park, which in 2021 became the newest national park in the United States: a spectacular gorge carved by one of the world's oldest rivers and spanned by a dizzying steel bridge. History lovers gather at Harpers Ferry, a beautifully preserved town tucked where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, site of John Brown's famous 1859 raid. Climbers set their sights on the quartzite pinnacles of Seneca Rocks, while others savor the elegance of The Greenbrier. Whitewater rafting, hiking and scenic drives shape any visit. Authentic and unspoiled, West Virginia offers raw nature just a few hours from Washington, D.C.

John Sayles' Matewan (1987), about a 1920 coal miners' strike, was shot in the old coal town of Thurmond, deep in the New River Gorge.
✨
Despite its name, the New River ranks among the oldest rivers on Earth, estimated at 260 to 325 million years old, the oldest in North America.

Good to know
ℹ️
Spring and autumn are ideal: high water in spring, blazing forests in October. Summer suits rafting and swimming, while snowy winters draw skiers to Snowshoe. A car is essential, as the mountainous terrain and lack of public transit leave sites remote. Winding roads mean you should budget extra time between stops. Mobile network coverage is decent in cities like Charleston and Morgantown but grows very patchy, or disappears entirely, in the deep gorges, forests and rural mountain areas. Download maps and routes offline before venturing into the backcountry.
