The guide
Vermont is rural New England at its gentlest: rounded hills, dairy farms, covered bridges and white steeples rising above the villages. Nicknamed the Green Mountain State, it unfolds a chain of forested mountains made for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. It is also maple syrup country, home to artisan cheeses and craft breweries, not to mention the famous ice cream factory in Waterbury. Burlington, its largest city, enlivens the shores of Lake Champlain with a pedestrian street full of shops and cafes. In Stowe, the spires of a white church and the surrounding peaks form a perfect postcard. In autumn the foliage sets the slopes ablaze in red and gold, drawing travelers from around the world. Here the pace is slow, nature generous and the welcome warm.

Good to know
ℹ️
Vermont is a year-round destination: skiing and snowshoeing in winter, hiking and lake swimming in summer, and above all the spectacular foliage from late September to mid-October, the most popular season. Book lodging early in the fall, as rooms fill fast. A car is essential for exploring the back roads, covered bridges and farms selling maple syrup and cheese. Taste the syrup straight from the producers. Mountain roads can be snowy in winter. As for connectivity, mobile coverage is decent in the main towns and valleys, but thins noticeably in the mountainous, wooded areas of the state's interior.
