The guide

Oklahoma is the America of Route 66 and the Great Plains. The state keeps the longest drivable stretch of the legendary Mother Road, dotted with neon signs, diners and murals, especially around Tulsa, its self-styled capital. In Oklahoma City, the national memorial honors the victims of the 1995 bombing in a deeply moving place. Oklahoma is also a heartland of Native America: 39 nations are recognized here, and Tahlequah is the capital of the Cherokee Nation. To the west, the Wichita Mountains host free-roaming bison and longhorns. Between cowboy culture, a rich music scene and warm hospitality, the state is best explored behind the wheel, on vast roads where the sky seems never to end.

Scorsese's “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023) rebuilt 1920s Fairfax along the main street of Pawhuska, in Osage country.

The world's first parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City on July 16, 1935, at the corner of First Street and Robinson Avenue.

Near Pawhuska, the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve protects the largest tract of intact tallgrass prairie left on Earth, complete with bison.

Must-see

Route 66 in Tulsa
Dubbed the Capital of Route 66, Tulsa rolls out one of the most iconic stretches of the Mother Road. Restored neon, murals, sculptures and retro diners line its 28 miles, perfect for a nostalgic road trip across the city.
Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum
Built on the site of the 1995 bombing, this striking memorial lays out 168 empty chairs, a reflecting pool and a surviving elm. The museum tells the story of the tragedy and the city's resilience with great restraint.
Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
This western refuge shelters free-roaming bison, elk, longhorns and prairie dogs against a backdrop of granite hills. From the summit of Mount Scott, reachable by car, a panoramic view sweeps 360 degrees across the plains.
Cherokee National History Museum, Tahlequah
In the heart of the Cherokee Nation's capital, this museum complex traces the history and culture of the Cherokee people, including the wrenching Trail of Tears. Village recreations and living exhibits round out the visit.

Good to know

Fall is the best season: mild temperatures and the end of the storm period. Spring is green but prone to thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes, as Oklahoma sits in the heart of Tornado Alley, so keep an eye on local forecasts. Summer is hot and dry; winter is cool with little snow. The car rules here: distances are vast and Route 66 is meant to be taken slowly. U.S. carrier coverage is strong in cities and along main highways and the interstate, but thins out across the remote western plains and parts of the Wichita Mountains.
