The guide

North Dakota rolls out endless prairies and dramatic badlands along the Canadian border, in the far north of the American plains. Shaped by millions of years of erosion and the Little Missouri River, the badlands hold Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where bison, prairie dogs, wild horses and elk roam striking landscapes. At the park's southern edge, the small Western town of Medora revives the spirit of the Old West. Farther east, Fargo, the state's liveliest city, offers a vibrant downtown, galleries and a respected food scene. To the north, the International Peace Garden celebrates friendship between the United States and Canada along the world's longest unfortified border. Still spared from mass tourism, North Dakota rewards travelers seeking wide open spaces, silence and big skies.

Despite its title, the Coens' Fargo (1996) filmed almost nothing in Fargo; the crew moved up to Grand Forks chasing snow.

Since 1932, the tiny town of Rugby has claimed to be the geographic center of North America, though no federal agency has ever confirmed it.

Explore Theodore Roosevelt National Park, free of crowds and lines, for its bison, wild horses, and the sweeping Painted Canyon.

Must-see

Theodore Roosevelt National Park
More than 70,000 acres of badlands across three units. Bison, prairie dogs and wild horses inhabit the park; the North Unit's scenic byway leads to the Oxbow Overlook and its sweeping panorama over the Little Missouri River.
Medora
A small Western town at the park's south entrance and an ideal base for exploring. In summer it stages the open-air Medora Musical and recreates a faithful Old West setting at the foot of the badlands.
International Peace Garden
A botanical garden of nearly 2,339 acres straddling the US-Canada border, celebrating peace between the two nations. It blooms each year with over 100,000 flower varieties and houses a Peace Chapel inscribed with quotations.
Fargo
The state's largest city, in the east, with a lively downtown of galleries, breweries and restaurants, plus the Northern Plains Botanic Garden, made up of a Japanese garden, a children's garden and an edible forest, free to enter.

Good to know

North Dakota has long, harsh winters, often well below freezing, and short but pleasant summers. The ideal window runs from late May to September, for the badlands, wildlife and the Peace Garden in bloom. A car is essential: the state is vast, sparsely populated and distances are long, so refuel whenever you can. Bring warm layers even in summer, as nights are cool, and water for hikes. Be wary of dirt roads after rain. As for connectivity, mobile network coverage is adequate in Fargo, Bismarck and along Interstate 94, but can vanish in the badlands and remote rural areas.
