Montana earns its nickname of Big Sky Country: an immense sky over endless plains and dramatic Rocky Mountains. To the north, Glacier National Park unfolds its jagged peaks, glacial lakes and the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road. To the south, the state shares Yellowstone's north entrance with Wyoming. In between lie forests, trout rivers, wilderness areas like the Bob Marshall, and great lakes such as Flathead. The gateway towns, Bozeman, Missoula and Whitefish, blend western spirit, college-town energy and outdoor culture. This is a Montana you come to hike, fish, watch wildlife and drive for hours through landscapes that seem never to end, far from the crowds and in tune with the open country.
🎬A River Runs Through It (1992) was filmed on the Gallatin River, near Bozeman, immortalizing fly fishing.
✨Glacier National Park held over 80 glaciers in 1850; today only about 25 active ones remain.
🧭Drive Going-to-the-Sun Road early: the alpine route is narrow and the Logan Pass lot fills before 9 a.m.
ℹ️Summer is the best season: it is the only time the Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open, generally early July through mid-October. Good news, Glacier no longer requires vehicle reservations in 2026. Distances are long and a car is essential; fill up before entering the park and stock up in towns like West Glacier or St. Mary. Pack water, snacks and warm layers, as mountain weather shifts fast. As for the network, coverage is very limited inside Glacier: the signal barely reaches past Apgar Village on the west side and is nearly nonexistent on the east side. Download offline maps.
