The guide

At the crossroads of the United States, Missouri pairs vibrant cities with generous nature. Saint Louis, crowned by its famous steel arch beside the Mississippi, rivals Kansas City, a capital of jazz and barbecue. To the south, the Ozark Mountains unfurl forests, rivers, and the vast Lake of the Ozarks, a haven for water sports. Branson, nicknamed the live-music capital, lines up theaters and shows in a mountain setting, while the state hides some 7,000 caves and superb natural parks. Between urban culture, musical traditions, and the outdoors, Missouri offers a surprising range of experiences, accessible year-round and often gentle on a traveler's budget.

Kansas City's Union Station and the 18th and Vine district set the scene for Robert Altman's film Kansas City (1996), set in 1934.

The 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis popularized the ice cream cone, which later became Missouri's official state dessert.

In Kansas City, the historic 18th and Vine district, cradle of local jazz, houses the American Jazz Museum and the Blue Room venue.

Must-see

Gateway Arch
In Saint Louis, this 630-foot steel arch, the tallest monument in the United States, is climbed by tram to the top for a striking view over the city and the Mississippi River.
Branson
Nestled in the Ozarks, this town nicknamed the live-music capital lines up theaters and shows; nearby, Silver Dollar City theme park offers roller coasters and themed entertainment.
Lake of the Ozarks
This vast reservoir with over 1,150 miles of shoreline is one of the Midwest's favorite getaways: swimming, boating, golf, and the superb Ha Ha Tonka State Park.
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
In Kansas City, this renowned museum gathers a rich collection of world art and is known for its lawn adorned with giant badminton shuttlecocks by Claes Oldenburg.

Good to know

Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for visiting, while summer can be hot and humid, though ideal for the Lake of the Ozarks. Distances between Saint Louis, Kansas City, and Branson are considerable: a car is essential for a full circuit. Good to know: the major cities and main highways enjoy good mobile network coverage, but the signal can weaken in the rural Ozarks and deep inside the many caves. Book Branson shows ahead in peak season and bring ways to stay cool in summer.
