The guide

Bordered by four of the five Great Lakes, Michigan boasts the longest freshwater coastline in the United States. The Lower Peninsula holds Detroit, birthplace of the automobile and Motown, and the western Lake Michigan shore, where the giant Sleeping Bear Dunes tower over turquoise waters. Farther north, Mackinac Island freezes time: with no cars, you get around by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle, between handmade fudge and Victorian hotels. Beyond the bridge, the wild, forested Upper Peninsula unfurls the multicolored cliffs of Pictured Rocks along Lake Superior. Lighthouses, forests, vast beaches, and welcoming lakeside towns make for a state at once industrial and firmly turned toward nature, glorious in summer and under snow alike.

Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino (2008) was shot entirely in Detroit and Highland Park, with many local residents cast in the film.

With roughly 3,288 miles of coastline, Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the country, second overall only to Alaska.

On Mackinac Island, cars have been banned since 1898: getting around means bicycles, walking, or horse-drawn carriages.

Must-see

Mackinac Island
Reached by ferry, this car-free island is explored by carriage or bicycle. The state park covers more than three-quarters of the island, with over 70 miles of trails, the natural Arch Rock formation, and its famous fudge.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Near Traverse City, these colossal dunes rise hundreds of feet over Lake Michigan. Turquoise waters, beaches, and spectacular sunsets earned it the title of most beautiful place in America.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
On the Upper Peninsula along Lake Superior, these mineral-stained sandstone cliffs are best seen by kayak or boat. The first national lakeshore in the United States, with coves, waterfalls, and secluded beaches.
The Henry Ford & Greenfield Village, Detroit
In the Detroit area, this vast museum complex dives into American industrial history. Nearby, the Motown Museum delights music lovers at the birthplace of a legendary sound.

Good to know

Summer, from June to September, is ideal for beaches, dunes, and hiking; autumn sets the forests ablaze with color, while the long, snowy winter draws winter-sports enthusiasts. A car is essential to link the often far-flung sites, and Mackinac Island is reached by ferry. Book early in the peak summer season. As for connectivity, Lower Peninsula cities and hubs like Marquette or Houghton enjoy solid 4G/5G coverage, but vast stretches of the Upper Peninsula, near the Ottawa National Forest and the Escanaba River, remain dead zones, so download your maps in advance.
