The guide
Small but surprisingly varied, Maryland packs in an Atlantic coast, Appalachian mountains and the vast Chesapeake Bay, kingdom of the blue crab. Baltimore, its largest city, charms with a lively Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium and red-brick neighborhoods. An hour away, the capital Annapolis enchants with colonial cobblestone streets and the prestigious Naval Academy. Offshore stretches Assateague Island, famous for its wild horses galloping across pristine beaches. To the west, the Antietam battlefields recall the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. Between celebrated seafood, fishing villages and dense history, Maryland is easy to explore from nearby Washington, D.C. A compact state where sea, land and heritage sit within just a few dozen kilometers of one another.

The Blair Witch Project (1999) shot most of its forest wanderings in Seneca Creek State Park, in Montgomery County.
✨
In 1962 Maryland became the first U.S. state to name an official sport: ring jousting, where riders spear a ring an inch wide at full gallop.
🧭
In Annapolis, walk the Naval Academy grounds then the harbor: the crab shacks serve the bay's blue crab dusted in Old Bay seasoning.

Good to know
ℹ️
Late spring and early autumn are the most pleasant: mild weather, beaches still accessible and thinner crowds. Summer is hot, humid and perfect for seafood, while winter stays cool. A car greatly eases travel between the bay, the coast and the mountains, though Baltimore has trains and buses. Factor in bridges and ferries to reach some islands. Mobile network coverage is excellent across the Baltimore-Annapolis-Washington corridor, one of the most densely connected regions in the country, but can weaken on barrier islands like Assateague and in the rural western mountains. Carry offline maps for remote outings.
