The guide

Maine is the wild edge of New England, where the Atlantic crashes against pink granite cliffs and white lighthouses perched above the water. A land of forests, lobster and small fishing harbors, it boasts a coast carved by thousands of coves, pebble beaches and hidden inlets. Its heart is Acadia National Park, on Mount Desert Island, where mountains meet the ocean. Further inland, vast lakes and deep woods invite canoeing and hiking. Portland, the state's food-loving city, charms visitors with craft breweries, lively wharves and renowned seafood restaurants. Along the scenic byways, shingled villages, waterfront lobster shacks and sunsets over the bay shape a journey where nature always reigns. From sunrise on Cadillac Mountain to a fresh roll eaten dockside, Maine rewards travelers who slow down and follow the shoreline.

Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth appears in the 1999 film “Snow Falling on Cedars”, shot during the famous Maine ice storm.

Eastport, Maine is the easternmost city in the continental United States, making it the first place in the country to see the sunrise.

For Acadia, book your Cadillac Mountain vehicle reservation early, or hike Champlain Mountain instead for the same sunrise with far fewer people.

Must-see

Acadia National Park
The only national park in New England, it covers most of Mount Desert Island. The 27-mile Park Loop Road links Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and coastal trails running right along the Atlantic shoreline.
Cadillac Mountain
The highest peak on the U.S. East Coast and one of the first spots in the country to catch the sunrise. A summit road climbs to sweeping panoramas over the bay and surrounding islands.
Portland Head Light
Maine's oldest lighthouse, standing in Fort Williams Park at Cape Elizabeth since 1791. It draws nearly a million visitors a year to its ocean-facing lawns and rocky shoreline.
Bass Harbor Head Light
The only lighthouse on Mount Desert Island, set on a rocky headland at the southern end of Acadia. Short trails on either side offer dramatic views, especially at sunset.

Good to know

The best season runs from late June to early October, with mild summers and a blazing autumn. Visit Acadia early in the morning to beat the crowds, and note that summit access on Cadillac Mountain often requires a timed reservation in peak season. Without a car, getting around outside Portland and Bar Harbor is hard, though seasonal shuttles serve the park. Try lobster at waterfront pounds, cheaper than in restaurants. As for connectivity, mobile coverage is solid in towns and along major routes, but can grow patchy in the northern forests and on some remote stretches of coast.
