The guide

Georgia spreads an astonishing range, from the Atlantic coast to the Appalachian mountains. Coastal Savannah charms with its oak-shaded squares draped in Spanish moss, its preserved architecture and a celebrated arts and dining scene. Inland, dynamic Atlanta concentrates family attractions and major landmarks. To the north, just 90 miles from the metropolis, the Blue Ridge Mountains offer 300 miles of trails, the start of the Appalachian Trail, and rivers made for rafting and kayaking. Between apple orchards, mountain towns and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, the contrast with the coastal heat is total. Tybee Island beaches, Chattahoochee forests and history-laden cities: Georgia marries Southern hospitality, food and wide-open spaces with a generosity that invites you to take your time and linger.

Forrest Gump's (1994) bench scene, where he tells his life story, was filmed in Chippewa Square in Savannah.

Coca-Cola was first served at Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta in 1886, selling just nine glasses a day in its modest early days.

In Savannah, stroll the oak-and-Spanish-moss squares; the Forrest Gump bench now sits inside the Savannah History Museum.

Must-see

Savannah Historic District
One of the largest preserved historic centers in the country, famed for its shaded squares, the 1858 Forsyth Park fountain and remarkable architecture. The Jepson Center for the Arts rounds out a visit.
Blue Ridge and Chattahoochee National Forest
Ninety miles north of Atlanta, with 300 miles of trails and the start of the Appalachian Trail. A scenic railway, Mercier Orchards apple picking and rafting on the Ocoee and Toccoa set the pace of mountain adventure.
Tybee Island and its lighthouse
A beach town a short drive from Savannah. Its red-and-white striped lighthouse, 144 feet tall with 178 stairs, holds a First Order Fresnel lens and has guarded the entrance to the Savannah River for centuries.
Stone Mountain Park, near Atlanta
A massive granite dome rising 825 feet above the plain. A roughly one-mile hike leads to the summit along a rocky trail offering sweeping views over the Atlanta area.

Good to know

Spring, March to May, is ideal: mild temperatures, blooms and thinner crowds for strolling historic neighborhoods or hiking in the mountains. October is the best fall month, with pleasant weather and nature at its peak. Summer is hot and very humid, especially on the coast. A car is strongly recommended: sights are widely spread, from Savannah to the Blue Ridge Mountains by way of Atlanta, and public transit is limited outside city centers. Allow about four hours of driving between Atlanta and the coast. Network coverage is strong in Atlanta, Savannah and along the main routes, but can weaken in the deep valleys of the northern Appalachians.
